The Loire rise in the south of Auvergne. It is long of kilometres and is the longest river of France. The Allier rises in the centre of France and tumultuous waters is at the origin of the exceptional natural site: the Gorges de l'Allier. Nautical activities are available on several of the region's lakes, notably at:lake of Bort les Orgues, Lake Lavalette or pond of l'Allier and pond of Garabit.

This runs from its junction with the east-west European cycle route EV6 Danube to the Atlantic at Cuffy, just south of Nevers Burgundy , to the Mediterranean coast south of Montpellier.
The Auvergne section of V70 is due for almost complete opening in ; basically it follows the valley of the river Allier from near its confluence with the Loire near Nevers, to Pradelles, just north of Langogne, and close to the river's source.
Following the river Allier almost up to its source, It is the easiest of the north-south cycle routes to the Mediterranean. South of Pradelles, cyclists can follow relatively traffic-free routes through Langogne, then the D which slopes gently down from the Col du Thort towards Villefort and on to the Mediterranean plains.

Art-nouveau elegance in the spa town of Vichy Old rural traditions still survive here and there Gentle hill country of the Haut Allier - Haute Loire Steep climb up the pilgrims' way to the romanesque cathedral in Le Puy en Velay.
