In the reader's first glimpse of the dystopia, Huxley drives home the significance of his futuristic world with the motto "Community. The Fordian world does not seem so menacing and sinister as Orwell's , but the reader can see even in the first chapter that the cheeriness masks a dark reality. Personal identity — perhaps even humanity itself — is strangled by the demands of community and stability.
On the tour, the D. In a brilliant adaptation of Ford's assembly line, the Central London Hatchery turns out nearly interchangeable human beings, who, like the D. Stability requires both the elimination of differences except with regard to caste and the end of dissatisfaction.
The eugenics lab answers the identity challenge; conditioning manages satisfaction. The D. Huxley employs several narrative techniques to introduce his dystopia in the first chapter. The tour for new students affords a realistic opportunity for Huxley to explain the theories and practices of stability while immersing the reader in the physical world of the dystopia.
I do not know if that is different from the color of an ordinary sickly face. As Freudian Slit says, he also mentions the purple eyes of these people, and seems to be attributing that color to their having lupus, so maybe that is the color he means, but if so, it is not very clear. Some of you are implying that Huxley not only knew of the disease Lupus , but was even aware of some of its manifestations. I find both of those conclusions very hard to believe.
How are the castes different? What are the sexual norms of the World State? Why are Lenina and Bernard attracted to and repelled by each other? It follows, then, that Epsilons are at the bottom. And they're stupid. But they're stupid because they're engineered to be stupid by oxygen deprivation. The current issue on the table is how to get Epsilons to mature faster physically, since their brains do not need time to mature anyway. They're working on it. The students observe the predestinating process: men are conditioned to love whatever job they will have.
In other words, men who have to mine in the tropics are conditioned to hate the cold. Men who have to hang upside-down doing rocket repairs are conditioned to only be happy when they're upside-down. While the Director elucidates further, Mr. Foster greets one of the workers—Lenina. This is a "Helloooooo nurse" kind of moment i. It becomes apparent that Lenina and Mr. Foster have some sort of "thing" between them sex , but she smiles equally beamingly at the Director when he gives her two or three "little pats.
And we're guessing "sexual harassment" in the world of Brave New World is as outdated as natural birth. Foster insists on taking the group into the Decanting Room to look at the new batch of "Alpha-Plus intellectuals.
