However, when Solomon was born, David's sin had been revealed, confessed, and forgiven. God accepted the marriage and the son Solomon. Notice, at the birth of Solomon, the Lord loved him.
It means "beloved of God. And, the one who was "beloved of God" could also be said to be the one "belonging to God" meaning of Lemuel. So, although the identity cannot be nailed down with absolute certainty, there is good reason to think that Solomon is here referring to himself. Welcome, visitor! For instance, in his account of the joint ministry of the Paul and Barnabas, Luke switches the order of the names of Paul and Barnabas, listing first whoever was more well-known or more active in ministry at that particular time. See Acts , ; , 3, 12, 14, 23; , 12, 22, 25, In the last chapter of his letter to the Romans, when Paul lists the twenty-eight Christians in Rome who he wants greeted, he lists Priscilla first! I have written about this verse here.
Become a Patron! Love your blog! I just found you a couple weeks ago and have already learned so much from your posts. Keep up the good work. I have several grammars because each teacher-writer approaches it with slight differences. This is wonderful, Marg. I love the examples of wise, strong women who spoke authoritatively as they were called.
Thank you so much for the information. I wanted to add that your posts have been me some clarity on the gender issues being taught in the church. I was listening to some very popular reformed pastors, and I started to feel very confused as to why the women leaders in the Bible were so blatantly being over looked to fit the agenda they were teaching.
Your blog has been one of the ones that has helped me understand some of these issues better. I really appreciate it , more than you know! Taking my cue from Heather to tell you that you are an incredible help to me, also! I already wrote you via the contact form, but not sure if it went through. I had showered you with love and praises, telling you that childhood abuse left my mind confused and wondering what God really thinks of women, and how he views us etc.
I was hoping to learn that he values us a lot more than Driscoll seems to think could not resist…. I believe God led me here. I read healing words, wonderful words that God is using to enlighten and heal me, and many others… You taught me that women are just as much created in the image of God wow as men are, and many other amazing things! I have never in my life felt so loved and valued by God, as a Christian and as a woman, and you are part of the reason why! So, even if you did get my earlier message, allow me to gleefully thank you here, publicly!
Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge, and your extremely high levels of awesomeness with the world. Not sure what happened there. The Cosby Show and Claire Huxtible, people said she was make believe and there were no women like her. There are a lot of women like her and she was an adaptation of these women. I have no doubt that there were many intelligent and articulate women in Bible times; and that these women used their abilities, as much as they could, in all sorts of situations and circumstances.
Some Bible women taught and led men, without gender seeming to have been an issue. Good morning! I am proud to be an educated woman, and the leader of our worship team, and Commander of our Awana club, but I am much more proud to be the mom of my two boys and wife to my husband, whom the The Lord gave me.
Why do women feel the need to HAVE to teach men? Why not be happy and blessed teaching women? I love mentoring young women and have been very blessed….. Benson Commentary Proverbs The words of King Lemuel — Of Solomon, by the general consent both of Jewish and Christian writers: this name signifies one from God, or, belonging to God, and such a one was Solomon eminently, being given by God to David and Bath-sheba as a pledge of his reconciliation to them after their repentance.
It must be acknowledged, some have doubted whether Lemuel was not a different person; but, according to Dr. Delaney and many others, without sufficient reason. I have examined them with all the care and candour I am capable of, and conclude, upon the whole, that their objections are such as my readers, of best understandings, would be little obliged to me either for retailing or refuting.
Those who are grown up, should often call to mind the good teaching they received when children. The many awful instances of promising characters who have been ruined by vile women, and love of wine, should warn every one to avoid these evils. Wine is to be used for want or medicine.
Every creature of God is good, and wine, though abused, has its use. By the same rule, due praise and consolation should be used as cordials to the dejected and tempted, not administered to the confident and self-sufficient. All in authority should be more carefully temperate even than other men; and should be protectors of those who are unable or afraid to plead their own cause.
Our blessed Lord did not decline the bitterest dregs of the cup of sorrow put into his hands; but he puts the cup of consolation into the hands of his people, and causes those to rejoice who are in the deepest distress. If we refer the chapter to Israelite authorship, we may remember the honor paid to the wisdom of Miriam, Deborah, and Huldah; if it was the honor paid to an Edomite or an Arabian, we may think of the Queen of Sheba, whose love of Wisdom led her to sit at the feet of the son of David.

A useful resource aside from the tools I have in Logos that can be helpful from time to time is the Jewish Encyclopedia site that is online. There are a lot of references to Lemuel on that site. After a basic search one of the more interesting ones is that Massa was related to the Kedemites, who were known for their wisdom.
The Kedemites enjoyed among the Israelites a great reputation for wisdom. Not only does David quote a Kedemite proverb which he characterizes as such, but the wisdom of the Kedemites is rated only lower than Solomon's though higher than that of the Egyptians I Kings , and Isaiah represents the Egyptian king's wise men as seeking to impress him by claiming descent from sages of Kedem this, not "of old," is the meaning of qedem in Isa.
