If you'd like to avoid the parking fee charged at Graceland's parking lot - adjacent to the airplanes - go a little further down EP Blvd to Graceland crossing.
It's a small shopping center - look for the sign for Graceland Herley Davidson. You my park there free of charge. Graceland a diamond in the middle of a dangerous neighborhood. Graceland was everything we thought it would be and more! We loved seeing Graceland but, its in the middle of a really dangerous neighborhood and I wish that Graceland took the safety of their guests more serious. Its the tourists that pump the money into Graceland so that it even exsists.
We had no clue that Graceland was in such a dangerous neighborhood The cops said the thieves pray hard on the tourists to Graceland and that something should be done. I say this Graceland should band together with the local businesses to clean up the neighborhood and make it safer for the tourists who keep it afloat. Graceland- please at least hire a community building team and see what it would take to clean up and make the Elvis Presley BLVD safe again.
It really is a shame that one of the worst neighborhoods in Memphis is named for one of the most loved super stars on earth , whom is known for being so giving. David P Cadiz, KY 11 contributions. This review is going to be rather long, but it's well worth the read.
Things at Graceland need to change or be closed down all together. In fact there is a group of people that are considering filing a class action law suit against Elvis Presley Enterprises. They have a major news agency chomping at the bit, to do their story. They learned of my story and want me to lead the way on this thing.
I don't think that I really want to do that, but I do want to see justice done here. I am a huge Elvis fan and I can tell you, that Elvis would not approve of the way his home is being managed, or the horrible way his fans are being treated.
I have wanted to see Graceland since I was a kid. Last summer, my family wanted to make that dream come true for me, before my up coming surgeries. I am disabled so of course we had a few questions that needed to be answered. We called ahead to Graceland and asked them if my family could carry my wheelchair down any stairs that we might encounter and help me up and down them.
Graceland told us that this would be fine and that people do this every day. With this information in hand, we started planning our trip. It took three attempts to get me their due to health issues, but we finally made it. We purchased the V.
Yes it is a carnival like atmosphere. We had to wait for the handicapped shuttle for quite sometime, but it finally arrived and off we went. As we pulled up in front of Graceland, I was so excited. Unfortunately that excitement would turn to horror, humiliation, lies, intimidation and disappointment!! First of all you are herded in like cattle and told to use the sub standard audio set that we had been given earlier, with head phones that were covered with hair and of course mine didn't work.
They use these because it allows them to herd massive amounts of people through at once, where as a personal guide would take too long to get people through. This way they can make more, of what they are all about We were then given this long set of rules. As you are trying to take in an exhibit, another group of people are brought in on top of you. You have two choices here, you can either move on or get run over. Due to this fact, you have to go through so fast, you don't even feel like you've seen anything.
It's comparable to driving by a house at M. I saw one person get too close to the rope and a staff member screamed at them. The staff members do not smile and they do not want to answer any questions.
They were down right rude. I have never felt so "not welcomed" in a place in all of my life. Anyway we came to the first set of stairs and we explained to the staff member standing their, that we had already contacted Graceland and we told her what they had said. The staff member told us to go ahead and as we were getting ready to go down, a staff member at the bottom of the stairs told us no, and added an "absolutely not!!
Everyone just stood their and stared at us. We tried to explain to him what Graceland had told us but, he didn't want to hear it. To go along with everything else, we had now been humiliated and lied to. In fact he called security on us. Within a few minutes, a uniformed security officer showed up and told us to follow him. Now intimidation was being added to this horrible nightmare.
He told us that we could see those rooms on a monitor outside. If I wanted to see those rooms on a monitor, I could have stayed home and watched them on "you tube" for free. To add insult to injury, security shadowed us for the rest of the tour. Well we continued on to the trophy room. People were so jammed in there, it was pointless to try and see anything, so we left. We were further informed that a staff member was already down their waiting for us.
This is when we knew without a doubt, that our every move was being monitored. Having to go in this way caused me to miss the one thing that I had wanted to see the most. I wanted to see the piano that Elvis had played and sung his very last songs on, on this earth. Had I been allowed to go in the front, I would have been able to see it. This hurt me very deeply. My health is failing at an alarming rate and this very well may have been my last chance to ever see this.
My wife had been taking some photos up ahead of my son and I and she walked passed a group of staff members and they were talking about us. When she came over to us, she was nearly in tears. By this time we were so upset and just wanted to hurry up and finish the tour. We finally completed the mansion tour, but now we had the exhibits across the street to complete.
We loaded up again and off we went. When we arrived at the drop off point across the street, the lift that was used to lower wheelchairs malfunctioned imagine that and the driver had already exited the shuttle. The remaining staff member didn't know what to do, so she radioed for maintenance. She was informed that the maintenance person had stepped out for a smoke Once again I was made to be a spectacle for all to see.
My son ended up repairing it and got me unloaded. Maybe they should give him a job Anyway we hadn't got 10 feet from the shuttle, when that kid who had taken our photo, descended upon us with our photos. Now how in the world could he have picked us out of a crowd and at that particular moment?
I will tell you how, because all stations were monitoring us, that's how. You would think by now, this nightmare was surely coming to an end Another thing I wanted to see, was Elvis' gold plated Cadillac Limo. We were informed that Graceland had sold it a few years back. I also read somewhere that Lisa Marie sold the fuzzy bed that Elvis had given her.
If they keep selling things, what will be left to see? The "68 Come back" exhibit wasn't much more than a monitor and some posters, that lead into a gift shop. All the exhibits basically lead to a gift shop. This place is on a scale of greed, like you wouldn't believe. I tried to get into the "Blue Hawaii" exhibit, but my chair wouldn't fit by the people who were sitting their.
Do you think anyone did anything to help me enter the exhibit? The staff members just stood their and stared. We were finally down to the final exhibit, which were Elvis' planes. I had always wanted to go inside of them, but because of the stairs, I wasn't allowed to.
I didn't get to see half of what I had paid to see. Basically I spent thousands of dollars on this trip to be horribly mistreated, lied to, kept out of exhibits, humiliated and intimidated. To this day, I barely remember any of the exhibits, because we were herded through so fast.
However I do remember the way my family and I were treated. I will never forget it!! When we finally loaded into our rental van, I hate to admit this, but I broke down and wept. It really tore my family up to see this. What a horrible, horrible nightmare this trip was!! When we got home my wife sent Graceland an e-mail to complain. When we didn't receive a reply after days and days had passed, she attempted to send another one When she tried to send another e-mail, they had already blocked us from doing so.
How about that!! My wife then called Graceland and was told that they would check the video tapes and conduct an investigation. After several weeks had passed and we still hadn't heard anything from them, she called back.
She was told that they were still checking the tapes. Well after a few more weeks had passed with still no word, my wife called them again.
